What Is the Canadian Dental Care Plan?

The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a federal government program designed to help Canadians who don't have dental insurance access the oral health care they need. It is administered through Sun Life on behalf of Health Canada.

A Federal Benefit Program

The CDCP is delivered by the Government of Canada and is available to eligible residents across all provinces and territories, including British Columbia.

Covers a Wide Range of Services

The plan covers preventive, diagnostic, and restorative dental services — from routine cleanings and X-rays to fillings, extractions, and root canals.

Based on Family Income

Your coverage level is determined by your adjusted family net income from your most recent tax return. The lower your income, the higher your coverage percentage.

No Upfront Premiums

Eligible Canadians do not pay monthly premiums to enroll. You simply apply through the government, receive your CDCP member card, and bring it to your appointment.

Do You Qualify for the CDCP?

To be eligible, you must meet all of the following criteria. If you're unsure, our front desk team is happy to help you check your eligibility before your appointment.

🍁

Canadian Resident

You must be a Canadian resident with a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN) who has filed a tax return.

🚫

No Dental Insurance

You must not have access to dental benefits through a private insurance plan, employer, or student plan.

💰

Income Under $90,000

Your adjusted family net income must be less than $90,000 per year, based on your most recent tax return.

Filing your taxes is a requirement for CDCP eligibility, as the government uses your tax return to verify your income. If you haven't filed recently, we recommend doing so as soon as possible. The Canada Revenue Agency has free filing resources available, and some community organizations offer assistance.
Yes — if your employer does not offer a dental benefit plan and you do not have private dental insurance of any kind, you meet the insurance requirement. If you're unsure, it's worth double-checking your employment paperwork or calling Service Canada.
Yes — please bring your CDCP member card (mailed by Sun Life after your application is approved) and a valid piece of photo ID. That's all we need to process your claim on your behalf.
We will always review your treatment plan with you in advance so you know exactly what your CDCP benefits will cover and what your co-pay, if any, will be. We'll never proceed with treatment that has unexpected out-of-pocket costs without your full knowledge and consent.
Children under 18 who meet the income requirements and have no dental coverage may be eligible for the CDCP. Dove Dental also offers comprehensive pediatric dental care — we love seeing young patients and helping them build healthy habits early.
Sun Life will notify you by mail once your application is processed. You can also check your application status by calling 1-833-537-2642 or visiting your My Service Canada Account online.
